Amzan Bookstore

Amzan is an independent bookstore and café, located in the heart of Sharjah. Originally an Arabic word, the literal English translation of ‘Amzan’ is ‘Nimbostratus’. The word derives from the Latin root ‘nimbus’ meaning rain, and ‘stratus’ meaning spread out. The concept plays on the analogy between the nourishing power of rain and the spread of knowledge from books. Just as rainwater can cultivate a forest, so too can a bookstore spread knowledge to the community, enabling the blooming of culture and literacy.

Nakkash Design Studio aimed to provide a space of multiple-use, translating the concept into a subtler manifestation of rain with carefully selected clear and reflective materials. Patterned concrete tiles and light wood alleviate the space and contribute to the placid environment.
